Vesak Day || Damdep || 2023

 Vesak day, also known as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti, is one of the most important festivals in Buddhism. It is celebrated by Buddhists around the world to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha. The festival falls on the full moon day in the month of May, and it is a time of great joy, reflection, and devotion for the followers of Buddhism.

The Sadhanagiri Buddha Vihar in New Jognasury (Damdep), located in the Chakma Autonomous District Council, Mizoram, India is one of the many places where Vesak day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. On May 5th, 2023, the monastery held a grand ceremony to mark the occasion, which was attended by more than 200 followers.

The celebration began with a colorful rally, which started from the Bazar shed and ended at the Sadhanagiri Buddha Vihar. The participants carried banners and flags with Buddhist symbols and chanted prayers and mantras as they marched towards the monastery. The rally was a vibrant display of devotion and community spirit, as followers of all ages and backgrounds came together to celebrate the Buddha's teachings.

Upon reaching the monastery, the abot of the Ven. Ariya Jyoti Thero unfurled the Buddhist flag, which is composed of six colors representing various aspects of Buddhism. Ven Ariya Jyoti Thero then explained the significance of each color to the followers, highlighting the importance of loving-kindness, peace, universal compassion, wisdom, and purity of mind in the teachings of the Buddha.

The unfurling of the Buddhist flag was followed by Buddha Puja, a ceremony in which the followers offered flowers, incense, and candles to the Buddha. The ceremony was led by the Ven. Ariya Jyoti Thero and Indra Jyoti Bhikkhu who chanted sutras and led the followers in meditation. The atmosphere was peaceful and contemplative, as the followers immersed themselves in the devotional practice.

After the Buddha Puja, Ven. Ariya Jyoti Thero delivered a Dhamma Desanaa, a discourse on the Buddha's teachings. He emphasized the importance of compassion, wisdom, and ethical conduct in achieving liberation from suffering. He also highlighted the relevance of the Buddha's teachings in the modern world and encouraged the followers to apply the teachings to their daily lives.

Despite the ongoing general election to the Chakma Autonomous District Council, the event proceeded smoothly, thanks to the efforts of the organizers and the cooperation of the local authorities. The Mandir Management Committee chairman, Dangu Nimisya Tongchangya, delivered a vote of thanks at the end of the ceremony, expressing his gratitude to the participants, organizers, and local authorities for their support. He also encouraged the followers to exercise their right to vote and to choose leaders who would uphold the values of peace, compassion, and wisdom that are central to the teachings of the Buddha.

The Vesak day celebration at the Sadhanagiri Buddha Vihar in New Jognasury was a beautiful and meaningful observance of the Buddha's teachings. It highlighted the importance of spiritual values, community participation, and commitment to the path of the Buddha's teachings, even in times of uncertainty and change. The event was a testament to the enduring legacy of the Buddha's teachings and the continued relevance of Buddhism in the modern world.

In conclusion, Vesak day is a time for Buddhists around the world to reflect on the Buddha's teachings and to renew their commitment to the path of liberation. The Sadhanagiri Buddha Vihar in New Jognasury provided a beautiful example of how this can be achieved through community participation, devotional practice, and the sharing of the Buddha's teachings. The event was a reminder that the values of peace, compassion, and wisdom are more important than ever in today's world.
